Hair Growth

What makes hair grow? Hair is made of keratin – the same protein as your finger and toe nails. Hair likes the minerals zinc and biotin. An inexpensive multi vitamin has an abundance of those two minerals. Pre-natal vitamins are also a good source of vitamins and minerals for your body and your hair when taken under the direction and care of a physician.

How fast does hair grow? Hair growth is in a cycle. It will go in a resting phase of two to three months and then grow at a rate of approximately a half-inch or one centimetre per month. Each hair has its own cycle and each hair grows at its own rate, which is one of the reasons why you need to trim your hair every six months or so. Depending on how damaged your hair gets from every day care should also determine how often you trim your hair. It is normal to lose about 50 to 100 strands of hair a day.

There is an age-old question of how to make hair grow faster. Unfortunately, you cannot. Faster hair growth is not possible. There are hair growth products out on the market that claim to promote fast hair growth. These products cannot do that. You can stimulate hair growth with products that are designed to grow hair, but do not expect results over night. Hair growth shampoo and vitamins for promoting hair growth are available with or with out prescriptions – see your doctor to find out which ones are best for you.

Occasionally we all get that little black hair growth on our chin or jaw line. Hormones are the cause of that as well as the growth of pubic hair. Some men grow chest hair if it is part of their genetics, and occasionally a woman does, too, depending on what is causing it.

For men, shaving is how to grow facial hair. However, daily cutting or trimming of the hair on your scalp – or even your legs – will not stimulate hair growth. Again, hormones have a huge role in the growth of facial hair.

There are other myths to hair growth and hair loss. Mild to moderate stress, bad circulation, sweat, and dirt are only a few of the myths that are not true. Ask your doctor or dermatologist for the truth about hair growth and hair loss. You will be glad you did.
