Arginine, or l arginine, is one of the 20 most common amino acids. The benefits of l arginine are many. L arginine functions as a primary role in cell division, wound healing, heart disease treatment, immune function, removing ammonia from the body, and the release of hormones. There are many foods high in arginine. Arginine is in chocolate, wheat germ and flour, buckwheat, granola, oatmeal, dairy products, beef, pork, nuts, seeds, poultry, wild birds, seafood, chickpeas, and cooked soybeans. There are a few other foods, high arginine is not necessary as most people do not have to take arginine as the body produces enough of it, however there is a safe dose of l arginine. The recommended daily dosage of l-arginine is 1.6 grams three times per day.
Arginine dosage should not exceed 40 grams per day; however, as the effects of l arginine could be severe. L arginine side effects include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and headaches. Individuals with herpes and other viral infections should not take arginine supplements, as it seems to promote the viral growth. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia are to avoid dietary supplementation of arginine above 30 milligrams per day. One physician says doses greater than 40 grams per day may be dangerous to patients with liver and kidney disease; however, another expert advises against any arginine for patients with liver and kidney disease without permission of a doctor. Arginine supplementation is not for pregnant women or nursing mothers, and supplemental amino acids not given to a child.
